Williams Leaving Dupont Main Streets: Executive director steps down as head of nonprofit neighborhood organization

The board of Dupont Main Streets, the local nonprofit organization working to promote and preserve the historic nature of the Dupont Circle neighborhood, announced Jan. 1 that Paul Williams, its executive director since April 2008, is leaving to return to his own business, a local historic preservation consulting firm.

''It has been a rewarding and challenging experience,'' Williams said in a Main Streets release, ''and I've gained a lot of new friends in the process and had a lot of fun creating new events such as the Taste of Dupont.''

Under Williams, Dupont Main Streets increased its yearly funding from $14,000 to $225,000 and established the Dupont Clean Team, which supplements the responsibilities of the city's Department of Public Works by shoveling, cleaning, weeding and picking up trash along the neighborhood's commercial corridors.

Dupont Main Streets is also responsible for various landscaping and renovation projects in the Dupont Circle neighborhood, and is seeking volunteers for other programs and events that will be held later in the year, such as the Dance in the Circle, the Taste of Dupont and the annual High Heel Race.
