D.C. Superior Court Judge Juliet J. McKenna on Saturday, Feb. 11, ordered that Gary Niles Montgomery, 55, of Northeast D.C., be held without bond as he awaits trial. Montgomery has been charged with second-degree murder while armed for the fatal stabbing of 23-year-old transgender woman Deoni Jones, also known as JaParker and Logan, as she stood at a D.C. bus stop.
Montgomery is scheduled for a preliminary hearing Feb. 23 at 9:30 a.m.
Jones was stabbed in the face on the evening of Feb. 2 while waiting at a bus stop at the intersection of East Capitol Street and Sycamore Road NE, in the city's Benning Heights neighborhood. A third person at the bus stop witnessed the attack and attempted to chase Jones's attacker, but stopped after realizing Jones was in need of medical attention.
Jones was transported to Prince George's Hospital Center in Cheverly, Md., where she died in the early morning hours of Feb. 3.
About 200 people gathered at the site of the attack Tuesday, Feb. 7, for a vigil honoring Jones.
