The Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, D.C. (GLAA), the nation's oldest continuously running gay rights advocacy organization, will mark its 41st anniversary with an April 26 soiree.
The anniversary celebration will feature an awards ceremony honoring individuals and organizations that have helped promote LGBT equality in the District. This year's Distinguished Service Award recipients are: Burgundy Crescent Volunteers (BCV), Sexual Minority Youth Assistance League (SMYAL), transgender activists Jeri Hughes and Ruby Corado, Metro Weekly managing editor Will O'Bryan and Jeffrey Richardson of the Mayor's Office of GLBT Affairs.
''We've accomplished a lot in four decades, but we still have to fight to see the enforcement of laws that promote LGBT equality,'' says Richard J. Rosendall, GLAA's vice president for political affairs, whose commentary appears regularly in Metro Weekly. ''This is particularly evident with discrimination against our transgender brothers and sisters. We'd like to recognize our honorees for their efforts. We're proud of them, and of all our friends and allies.''
GLAA's 41st Anniversary and Distinguished Service Awards event is Thursday, April 26, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Washington Plaza Hotel, 10 Thomas Circle. For tickets, starting at $50, call 202-667-5139 or visit glaa.org/anniversary.
