The AIDS Memorial Quilt has returned to Washington, D.C., where it will celebrate its 25th anniversary. The quilt, which now contains more than 48,000 panels filled with the names, pictures and artwork of those who have died from HIV/AIDS, has grown so large it cannot be displayed in one place. 8,000 panels (800 each day) will be displayed on the National Mall during the 10-day Smithsonian Folklife Festival, from June 27 to July 1, and from July 4 to July 8. Later in July, as Washington hosts the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012), more than 35,000 panels of the quilt will return to the Mall, where they laid out between 8th and 14th Streets NW from July 21 to 25. Close to 4,800 other panels will be displayed in more than 50 venues throughout the D.C. Metropolitan area during that same time period.
