President Barack Obama won re-election on Tuesday, November 6, 2012, beating his Republican challenger Mitt Romney.
A slice of Obama's diverse voting base poured out onto U Street in Northwest Washington, D.C. to celebrate for several late night hours. Chanting "Yes We Did," "U.S.A." and "Four More Years," a number of gay men and lesbians joined in on the festivities.
Police blocked off the street for safety, and tried several times to break up the ecstatic crowd.
The after-election celebration was not as massive as in 2008, but those who did come out seemed no less enthusiastic. This was especially true for the city's gay voters who were also celebrating a huge triumph over a marriage equality battle in Maryland. Several gay candidates won elections, and four marriage-related issues moved the nation toward full civil rights for the LGBT community.
